Warrnambool’s Flagstaff Hill Upgraded
The revitalisation of Warrnambool’s Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village is complete, backed by a $1.95 million grant from the Victorian Government.
Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism Danielle Green opened the upgraded $2.95 million popular tourist attraction last night that draws in thousands of visitors every year.
Established in 1974, Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village provides an immersive experience where visitors can step back in time for a taste of what life was like for the Shipwreck Coast’s first European settlers. Visitors can stroll cobblestone streets and explore heritage buildings that hold relics from Warrnambool’s past.
While the experience has grown in success over time, it was in need of a revitalisation to meet audience interest in interactive experiences.
As a result, the project has redesigned and refreshed the night-time sound and light show, installed digital screens that can be activated via a mobile app, and upgraded the village lighting and audio technology.
The project has moved the Visitor Centre to within the Village Reception and gift shop, and redeveloped the wharf and boat yard to improve safety and allow for more boat building and restoration projects to take place.
Importantly, the project has retained 14 existing jobs, supported at least 7 construction jobs and injected $3 million in to the local economy.
The Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village revitalisation project was delivered by Warrnambool City Council and aligns with the Labor Government’s ongoing investment to fully realise the economic potential of the State’s iconic tourism assets.
