Free Wi-Fi Pilot For Ballarat CBD

Locals and visitors to Ballarat will now be able to connect to a free public Wi-Fi service across a number of outdoor public spaces as part of the Andrews Labor Government’s Victorian Wi-Fi Project, a new 5-year pilot program.

Ballarat resident and Minister for Regional Development Jaala Pulford today announced the digital project that will make these regional Victorian cities better places to live, visit and do business.

The $11 million pilot will be the largest free public Wi-Fi service of its kind in Australia. The free service will be managed and maintained by telecommunications company TPG, allowing for up to 250 MB per device, per day and does not require personal logins or feature pop-up advertising.

Areas to be covered in Ballarat will include Sturt Street and Bridge Mall, the Botanical Gardens and the Lake Wendouree foreshore, the rail precinct, café and retail precincts and the Civic Precinct.

From today, outdoor public spaces in Bendigo’s CBD will also benefit from the Victorian Wi-Fi Project, with Melbourne CBD locations expected to rollout throughout 2016.

The underlying Wi-Fi infrastructure deployed will also play a key role in piloting innovative smart city projects that will leverage emerging technologies to enhance the quality, performance and interactivity of urban services. Once complete the project will provide a combined coverage zone of over 600,000 square metres across the three cities, while also being available for state and federal disaster response in the event of an emergency.

The 5-year pilot will help to determine the feasibility of free public Wi-Fi services for the state as part of a broader strategy to strengthen Victoria’s position as a digital leader.
