LETTER TO THE EDITOR: NAPTHINE ABANDONS AT-RISK YOUTH IN VICTORIA
An award winning crime prevention program for at-risk youth in Western Victoria
will be shutdown unless the Napthine Government intervenes, State Member for Western Victoria, Ms Pulford said today.
Operation Newstart assisted more than 2,000 of the State’s most at-risk young people before the Napthine Government withdrew support.
“Keeping young people in school and away from crime is so important, but Denis
Napthine doesn’t understand,” Ms Pulford said.
“Denis Napthine’s $100 million in cuts to Victoria Police is affecting young people and putting communities at risk.”
In 2010, Operation Newstart received a national crime prevention award for helping to reduce court appearances, improve school retention rates and provide better employment opportunities.
“Operation Newstart has proven a success in Western Victoria with 480 students completing the program.”
“If the Napthine Government wants to maintain a shred of credibility in the area of crime prevention then they need to support Operation Newstart.”
“I urge the Police Minister Kim Wells not to abandon our at-risk youth.”
